That’s a good point about Uhura. I’m certainly all for giving her a bigger role. I do see the hypocritical of having a franchise known for it’s diversity only represented by a trio of white men.

And I think if Uhura was filling the Dr. McCoy support requirements, that would be great, but it seemed to me that her character was mostly defined by who she was having sex with. Doesn’t that defeat all of the progressiveness you gain by putting a woman at the forefront? If she was the emotional counterpoint to Spock’s cold logic, that would work. Instead, by being romantically attached to him, she brought out Spock’s emotional side and reduced the overall personality contrasts.

Yes, I think the good doctor is under-appreciated, too. His relationship with Spock was one of the most interesting and complex on board. I’m concerned that they are replacing him with Uhura. I like her, but I don’t want to see McCoy edged out just so we can haz the womances.

Well, I’m reserving judgement until I’ve seen the film. But there may be a blog post from me in the future which will link here. Especially if one of the finest friendships on television gets scrapped in favour of kissy-facing. (OK, I was going to reserve judgement, wasn’t I? Calming down now…)

pretty much. it was bones and spocks interactions that added a chunk of humanity to the show. bones knowing what should be done for the sake of humanity. spock knowing what should be done for the sake of logic. kirk was there to make certain neither posed a threat to their mission. something to chew over indeed
