For that matter, Krypton itself had no effect on its people for all the time they lived there, so how can a random piece of it have any effect? (A radioactive piece, on the other hand…)
I think there was some plot point that said that what destroyed Krypton is what contaminated it. But you have to admit that it would be pretty weird to be on another planet and be scared of someone waving a glob of earth under your nose.
Not that I know much about Superman, but could it be possible that what’s basically happening is that Superman is unused to having “normal” strength, being more used to be superpowered? For him it might feel, mentally and physically, rather like suddenly being unable to lift a glass of water. So it’s not the effects of the Kryptonite per se, it’s the fact that you suddenly can’t make your body act the way you’re used to having it act; and that’s what cripples him.
That’s exactly what I was going for. Except that it’s a bit more ridiculous since Zortic knows perfectly well what it’s like to be “normal”
