There has been a lot of speculation lately about whether or not Benedict Cumberbatch is playing Khan in the new Star Trek movie.  As much as I’d really perfer it to be Gary Mitchell, I can’t imagine a better twist of the Mitchell/Kirk story than the episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before” so there’s really no need to redo that.   However I can imagine a fair amount of pressure on the film makers to bring Khan into the movie, it’s just that they aren’t going to do that unless they can give it a serious twist.

And so I’m going back to my original prediction about the next Star Trek movie. That Benedict Cumberbatch really is playing a new character named John Harrison who we’ve never seen before.  The twist is that Khan is also in the movie, just not the antagonist.

I’m guessing that the Enterprise (or some other ship since it’s an alternate reality) finds the Botany Bay and brings it back to Earth, but they don’t revive the crew like they did in the original episode.  In fact, we may never actually see Khan thawed out during the entire movie.  Instead, Cumberbatch’s character is another augmented human who ends up trying to restart the Eugenics Wars and fights Kirk over the figure that he sees as their military and spiritual leader, Khan.

So their claims of Khan being in the movie are true, but instead of being the antagonist, he’s the macguffin.  And their claim that Cumberbatch isn’t Khan is also true.  In fact, if they really want to establish this as a different universe, maybe Khan is awakened in the finale and takes sides with Kirk to fight John Harrison then ends up becoming Kirk’s friend.

And now if I’m right, I’ve got a written record of it right here.  If I’m wrong, forget that you ever read this.
